Luggard was rescued in March 2016 after bullets shattered two of his legs. Thanks to the quick attention and expertise of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust veterinary units, Luggard was brought to the Nursery and rehabilitated back to health. Since then, he has made a miraculous recovery, with only a slight limp to show for the struggles he has endured.

Since we last checked in on Luggard in June 2018, he has been busy around the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. While he still walks with a limp and struggles to keep up with others, he has become increasingly social, confident, and loving. As new orphans join the herd, Luggard becomes their caretaker, guiding them into the forest and helping them find food before safely returning to the Nursery. His closest companion is his stable-mate, Musiara, who matches his own pace to Luggard’s and plays gently with him so as not to exacerbate his injuries. In addition to his elephant companions, Luggard has a soft spot for his human caretakers and is always eager to meet newcomers.
