This month we are launching a new “Print of the Month” special feature. Each month, we will choose one of our favorite prints to highlight in our Journal and discount in our store in an effort to bring attention to some of our favorite pieces and causes.
Trapped in a well for more than two days, Ngilai, the smaller of the two elephants featured in the Family Ties print, had a rough start as an orphan at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Rescued at just three weeks old, Ngilai was severely injured and dehydrated when he was placed in the care of the devoted keepers at DSWT.
The back injuries and malnutrition Ngilai experienced during his 48 hours of neglect left him wary of humans and hesitant around other elephants. Thankfully, he made a few quick, loyal friends at DSWT who kept him company and showed him affection. His friends and mentors taught him to coat his injured back in mud and dust and ensured he could heal quickly and integrate successfully into his new herd.
In the three years he has been at DSWT, Ngilai has gained confidence and made friends. Rather than shying away from other animals, the Keepers often find Ngilai playing hide and seek and trading off back scratching sessions with the other orphans. His phenomenal growth is due not only to his tenacity, but especially to the passionate caregivers at DSWT.
Ngilai and his friends at DSWT need our support to ensure they are able to thrive. Read Ngilai’s diary entries and consider fostering him through the Orphan’s Project. This month, all purchases of the Family Ties print are discounted, and, as always, benefits the inspiring work of the DSWT team. Consider buying a print for yourself as well as a family member who has been particularly caring or supportive of you. We know this incredible piece will be treasured in any home!
